Additional Concussion Substitution
Beginning in Spring 2025, the Maryland League will adopt the latest changes from the IFAB Laws of the Game for the 2024/25 season. Among these updates, the league will implement the Additional Permanent Concussion Substitutions protocol, prioritizing player safety by allowing an extra substitution if a player is suspected of having a concussion. This change aims to ensure immediate care and reduce the risk of further injury, reinforcing the league’s commitment to player welfare.
An additional permanent concussion substitution occurs when a player who has an actual or suspected concussion is substituted and takes no further part in the match. This substitution does not count as one of the ‘normal’ permitted substitutions (or substitution opportunities, where applicable).

Designated Team Captain
Effective Spring 2025, under the updated IFAB Law 3.10, all teams in the Maryland League must designate a captain on the field of play at all times. The captain must wear an identifying armband to distinguish their role. This regulation reinforces the captain’s responsibility to act as the primary point of communication between the referee and the team, ensuring orderly conduct and adherence to the Laws of the Game.
Each team must have a captain on the field of play who wears an identifying armband.
